Hebr 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of [them], and embraced [them], and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims> ["exiles"-RSV] on the earth. {in faith: Gr. according to faith} 1Pet 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech [you] as strangers ["aliens"-RSV] and pilgrims ["exiles"-RSV], abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
Here we have another name of our Lord which depicts Him in His humility. What a contrast between the lily of the valley and other flowers! Its home is in the "lowly places" like Him Who said, "I am meek and lowly in heart". The ideal followers of Christ are not among those who seek "high places" but among those who, like Paul, can say, "God forbid that I should glory save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ". Let us, too, sit under the shadow of that Cross and look upon the "Lily of the Valleys" as we praise His blessed Name.
Thou "Lily of the Valleys", how gladly we come to Thee, and ask that we may live with Thee, --- in the valley. Amen.
