"JEHOVAH-NISSI"
Exod 17:15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi: {Jehovahnissi: that is, The LORD my banner} 16 For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn [that] the LORD [will have] war with Amalek from generation to generation. {Because...: or, Because the hand of Amalek is against the throne of the LORD, therefore, etc} {the LORD hath...: Heb. the hand upon the throne of the LORD}
It is neccessary to read this entire 17th chapter of Exodus in order to get the background of this picture. Amalek is fighting Moses and his followers. The battle is fierce. Joshua is leading the army. When Moses lifted up his hand, Joshua prevailed. When Moses lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed, but Aaron and Hur "stayed" Moses' hands until the going down of the sun, and Joshua won a great victory over Amalek. So "Moses built an altar and called the name of it Jehovah-Nissi" ("The Lord, my Banner!"). The Lord Jesus Christ is our Banner. Let us -daily- lift Him up!
Jesus, our Banner, we look to Thee today for victory over the world, the flesh and the devil, and thank Thee for it! Amen.
