A.B.Simpson wrote, "He will so fill us, if we will LET Him, that self & everything else will be taken out of the way!". Is that true? Does His "filling" us depend on our "letting"? Because, if that's true, then this "letting" thing must be the most powerful, most important thing in all heaven & earth! But then,... let me see..., I guess that's not so far-fetched and unusual after all! I mean, the most important thing for a water pitcher is to hold water; and the most vital thing for a candle is to give light; and mirrors had better reflect accurately!
And on & on it goes: FUNCTION is dictated/determined by FORM! The shape/form/image is the IDENTITY of the object, and pre-determined by it's Creator's PURPOSE! When we want to know our purpose, ("why am I here?"; "what am I good for?"; "what can I do?"; "why was I made?"), we need to get out the original "blueprint" or "schematic"! If we can just find out "who" we are (we think!), we can "figure" it out! ...WRONG!
Remember where our identity came from - Who "shaped" us for His Purpose! WE NEED TO GET TO KNOW GOD TO FIND OUT "WHO" WE ARE! Our identity will be found in His purpose for our life! After all, He gave us life ..... so WHY? Once we begin our search at the beginning (GOD!), we soon learn to "read" His "schematic" or "model", Jesus Christ! By looking at the "model" (exactly/precisely/Perfectly what God intend[s][ed] (purposed/planned/prepared for us), we see ("behold!") our "Alpha and Omega" (our Creator and FINISHER), and we learn, and expand, and grow, and become - more like Him!
God portrays Righteousness as an absolute, unwavering, severe, uncompromising "Plum-Line"! There is a simple ruthlessness about Jesus Christ: He cannot be distorted, distracted, blurred, tampered with, detoured, lured or tempted away from His "Primal Urge" to fulfill & completely satisfy, or "fill up" with what His Father had in Mind for Him as Son - all along! As God made us, He had our "End" in Mind all the while! He has never "forgotten" just how Special & Unique His Intentions (and dare we say Hopes?) for us were when He first "Expressed" our Creation.
And as we were His special thought originally, we have never "left" His Mind since! We were all made "vessels" (in the form of "emptiness") FOR God! That is, we were made to be FILLED with Him (by Him)! But we were also made AS Him (like Him), that is, in His Image -- with "free will", or "dominion"! But we "shared" that "free will" and "dominion" with God! How did we do that?
We Let as we were "Let" by God! God had two "Commands" long before the 10 Commandments! Indeed, these two were His "Creation Commands" for us! They were "LIVE!", and "GIVE!". In other words, "Live unto Me. Live as I Live! Give as I Give! As I have Given Life, so Give Life back to Me!"
It really does God no good to "Exhale" if we will not "Inhale" Him! Or, if we "inhale" and then attempt to "hold our Breath" (claiming we ARE Him)! Having been Given Life by God, we try to "hang onto it" & make it "MINE!". The reason it doesn't work is because you weren't made that Way! That's not how you function! And if you won't "breathe back to God", He cannot Re-fill you with Himself!
Life stopped is not Life (as God intended it!). Jesus said we'd have "rivers of Living water"! The thing about a river is that no matter how much "life" (water) flows in/down/through it, it never stops flowing! That's what a river IS! It takes no effort on the part of a vessel to be "filled"!
But (when that "vessel" has a "mind" of it's own!) it does take the vessel "letting" itself be filled! How does it do that? By turning! If a cup is upside down, it cannot be filled. But turn it toward (to "reflect") it's "Source", and it is automatically filled! Our "free will" turns us (either as "mirrors", or "vessels").
As we "become" what we "reflect", so we are "filled" with what we "let" (or obey!). We were made "co-responders". We were not made to function alone, and we cannot! Be not deceived - no man "operates" (responds) alone! "Obey" means "Let", and we were made to "Obey/Let"!
Ro 6:16 "Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey ("LET"), his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, OR of obedience unto righteousness?"
So much for "let"; what about "let go"? Well, we claim identity in ignorance! How? "MINE - MINE - MINE!" "Selfish" did not make us - "Gracious" did! How then is it we're selfish & grasping by "nature"? This is the "flesh-nature". But our New-Born Spirit-Nature is of Jesus Christ Who is Made unto us all Righteousness!
Eph 1:8,9 "Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:"
Col 3:16 "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."
I Cor 2:13 "Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual."
I Cor 1:30 "But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:" He is our Righteousness! But He is made UNTO us! What does that mean?
As we learn to "let God be God", and to "let go & let God", and to "take no thought!", and to "cast all our cares", and to "Come unto Him", and to "be still and KNOW!"; as we learn how to TAKE JESUS SERIOUSLY!, we learn to "align" ourselves with His "Plum-Line" and remember Isa 50:10 "Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God." BEHOLD! : Isa 26:3 "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee."
As we learn to "take every thought "captive" to Christ", and submit & share every tiny portion of our consciousness to/with Him, we become FOCUSED and "pre-occupied' with God! He becomes the Love of our Life, and we truly learn that our "strength is in the Joy of the Lord"!
As we learn how to "Abide" (dwell & remain) in Christ; as we begin to see our flesh really is dead & buried with Christ and our life "hid in Him"; as we see His Spirit Wishing, Willing, Doing & Accomplishing (overcoming) things in our lives that we know WE didn't do! - we continuously conform (more & more) to His Image!
Here is True Glory to God in the Highest! Even the Angels marvel! Our "function" is to be filled with Him and His Joy! Only then do we "glow" & become His "Lamp on a stand", or "city on a hill". Only then do we "LET our lights so shine"! Our letting His Will be ours turns loose this world and binds us on earth even as we are bound in heaven! So God's Will be done - IN US - as Spoken in Scripture and Finished I N - C H R I S T! As it is Written, ...so LET it be Done! Amen.
