Poetry seems to rise above language somehow, even piercing the veil of emotions and logic which tend, as the two grippers of a vise, to clamp down the spiritual nature of us human beings and render us somewhat paralyzed by our current circumstances. If it is man's nature to be carnal and brutish on the one hand, it is certainly his option, privilege, and should be his goal to rise above that same nature.

It is this trascendent quality of poetry that transports us and sets us free from the shackles placed on our imagination by the stultifying hum-drum of our ho-hum regimens - our day-to-day details and the tedium of habitual necessities. We all know that this life can become derelect and that doldrums can become irresistible sirens perched on rocky shoals; such lethal lethargy! Poetry, like song, can shake us out of these periodic deliriums. It can focus our attentions and galvanize our thoughts like no other medium, it seems. Why is this? Is it because the poet in writing must reach as far down into the thing he speaks of and bring up the dregs of the thing? Or is it because the poem insists that the reader or hearer listens so much more attentively than is our custom in casual communications these days?

So much of what we say and hear is blather - mindless, careless, empty words that stun us with their senslessness. Ill-conceived, rashly stated, roughly premised, they pretend to speak for us those things which are within. They do not! And we all tend to leave such things to those 'other's' that have such talents as we suppose ourselves bereft. Folks, this ought not to be so! Let each man and woman compose a few poems of their own concoction - from their own deep-down labyrinth of subterranean selves. Then let them LISTEN to these poems; poems from the depths they've just dredged from the somewhere inside. Then let them present these to God as their incense-offering. God knows the heart of us, and it does seem that He participates in the writing of any worthwhile poem somehow. And this Holy collaboration can produce some astonishing results. And not the least of this produce is SHARING!
